DESCRIPTION
Advocate Mr. Bidur Prasad Adhikari is recognized by his short name as BP Adhikari. He stands himself as a resilient academician, researcher and training oriented advocate in the field of human rights. As a human rights defender, he has worked under exceptionally difficult circumstances during the decade-long internal armed conflict of Nepal to safeguard fundamental civil liberties through national and international advocacy and campaign.
Court Practice Experience: Advocate Mr. Adhikari is a familiar name for law fraternity in Nepal. He has been rigorously engaged in court practices right after achieving license from Nepal Bar council. He holds his best practice experience as a Public Interest Litigation lawyer. He has been actively drafting, registering and pleading PIL cases as a chief litigator in Supreme Court. Some of his writ petitions are the petition filed on behalf of “Undocumented Tibetan Refugees.” On this writ petition, Mr. Adhikari is succeeded to give court’s verdict on behalf of Tibetan refugees who were denied by government to give basic documents referring their RC (Refugee Card). From this verdict, First Generation Tibetan Refugees holding RC card can give recognition to their young generation as a Tibetan Refugees residing in Nepal.
Correspondingly, as a human rights defender he has obtain positive outcome in the writ petition of Colonel Raju Basnet Vs Government of Nepal. In this case, Colonel Raju Basnet was promoted by the cabinet meeting of October 2012. However, Raju Basnet was accused of gross human rights violator by National Human Rights Commission and Office of United Nation High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) as a result they demand his suspension from Nepal Government. With the combine effort, proof of the evidence, litigation and rigorous defense, government promoted him. This was the case registered by INHURED International on behalf of victims in Supreme Court of Nepal, 2012. Nevertheless, he was proactive in the writ petition against Nepal Government on behalf of reproductive rights of the prisoners. On this case, Supreme Court delivered a landmark decision for the prisoners having reproductive rights.
Election Observation Experience: Advocate Mr. Adhikari has vibrant and long-time election observation knowledge on national and international election through the observation mission. He got opportunity to be deployed as a long-term International Election Observer of Thai Election 2011. Similarly, he has observed and closely monitored national elections since 1994 to present in different part of Nepal.
Academic Background: Advocate Mr. Adhikari holds Master Degree in Sociology/Anthropology from Tribhuwan University (2008) and Bachelor of Law (2010) from Tribhuwan University. In addition to this he has also earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Victimology and Victim Assistance Program from Tokiwa University (Japan) in 2008.
Professional Background: Advocate Mr. Adhikari has twodecadeslong working experience in the field of human rights. He has started his career in 2001 as a Sub-editor in Kasthamandap Weekly. Later on, he was appointed as a researcher on "Armed Conflict and its Diverse Impact" in Himalayan Human Rights Monitors from 2003- 2004. Continuous effort and enthusias later he became senior human rights officer in same organization till 2007. Thereafter, he was appointed as an Advocacy Director in INHURED International from 2007 to 2013. Subsequently, he was working as Project Director in INHURED International from 2015 to 2019.
